Polynesian vs Grand Floridian: Which Disney Resort Is Right for Your Family?

February 15, 2025

The Head-to-Head

Two iconic Disney Deluxe resorts. Both on the Monorail loop. Both within walking distance of each other (there's literally a path). Both expensive. Which one is right for your family?

We've stayed at both, multiple times, with a toddler and grandparents. Here's the honest comparison.

Side-by-Side: What We Scored

| Category | Polynesian | Grand Floridian | Winner | |---|---|---|---| | Pool | 9/10 | 8/10 | Polynesian | | Dining | 9/10 | 10/10 | Grand Floridian | | Location | 10/10 | 10/10 | Tie | | Toddler Friendliness | 9.5/10 | 8/10 | Polynesian | | Grandparent Experience | 8/10 | 10/10 | Grand Floridian | | Atmosphere | Relaxed tropical | Formal luxury | Depends | | Room Size | Larger | Slightly smaller | Polynesian | | Overall Vibe | Fun vacation | Luxury occasion | Depends |

The Atmosphere Difference

This is the real question. The Polynesian feels like a relaxed, fun tropical vacation — it has a vibe that works with kids. Children running around, families in flip-flops, drinks with umbrellas. Nobody's judging your wet toddler in the lobby.

The Grand Floridian feels like a luxury hotel. It's formally beautiful. Dressed adults pass through the lobby. There's a live orchestra. It's magnificent, and it actually is kid-friendly in policy — but the vibe is adult.

With toddlers: Polynesian wins on comfort. You'll spend less mental energy worrying about whether your child's poolside chaos fits the atmosphere.

For grandparents: Grand Floridian is often preferred. Our parents specifically said the Grand Floridian felt like "a real vacation" — high praise.

Dining

Grand Floridian has the better dining collection. Narcoossee's, Victoria & Albert's (adults only), 1900 Park Fare for character dining.

Polynesian has Ohana (which is excellent for toddlers — family-style, character breakfast available) and Captain Cook's (excellent counter service).

For families prioritizing dining for adults: Grand Floridian. For families prioritizing character dining for toddlers: Polynesian.

The Pool

Polynesian's Lava Pool with the volcano waterslide is more fun for toddlers. The zero-entry is excellent. Beach Club's Stormalong Bay is objectively better than both, but between these two? Polynesian.

Our Pick for Families with Toddlers

Polynesian. It's not close. The relaxed atmosphere, better pool, excellent character dining, and more comfortable family vibe gives it the edge.

Our Pick for Special Occasions / Grandparent Trips

Grand Floridian. The luxury and elegance are genuinely worth experiencing, and it's the right choice when the grandparent experience is equally as important as the toddler experience.
