Our Take
If you only stay at one Disney Deluxe resort with a toddler, make it Animal Kingdom Lodge. Nothing else on property comes close for pure, unfiltered toddler wonder.
We stayed with our son when he was 18 months old. On the morning of our first full day, he woke up, walked to the balcony door, and we opened it to reveal a giraffe standing about 40 feet away looking back at him. He didn't say anything for almost a minute. Just stared. Then he turned to us with the biggest eyes we've ever seen on a child.
That moment — that singular moment — justified every penny of this trip. We have it on video. We've watched it probably 200 times.
The Savanna
This is the thing. The reason Animal Kingdom Lodge exists and the reason you should stay here.
Real African wildlife — giraffes, zebras, flamingos, various antelope species — roam the savanna that borders the resort. If you request a savanna-view room, you'll have animals visible from your balcony at nearly any hour of the day.
Pro tip: Animals are most active at dawn and dusk. Plan your balcony time accordingly. We would set our son up with breakfast on the balcony every morning — it was our family ritual for the whole trip.
There are also savanna viewing areas accessible to all guests, staffed by knowledgeable animal cultural representatives who can answer questions. Free educational content for the whole family.
The Pool
Uzima Pool is excellent — it's a zero-entry pool with a waterslide and a separate kiddie area. The pool area at AKL tends to be less crowded than pools at other Deluxe resorts because it's slightly less central on property.
Samawati Springs pool at Kidani Village (the DVC wing) is also available to Jambo House guests. Useful to know when Uzima is packed.
Dining
Jiko — The Cooking Place is one of the best table-service restaurants on all of Disney World property. African-inspired cuisine with an extraordinary wine list. We did this for a parents' dinner out while grandparents watched.
Boma — Flavors of Africa is a buffet that completely surprised us. Toddler-friendly in format, adventurous in flavor, and one of the best food values on property. Our son ate more here than anywhere else on the trip.
The Room
Savanna-view rooms are absolutely worth the upcharge. Standard rooms are lovely and generously sized. Request the Arusha or Kudu Trail sections of Jambo House for shortest walk to the main lobby.
Pack-n-play available on request. Rooms have good blackout curtains — crucial for toddler naps in Florida sunshine.
Grandparent Notes
Animal Kingdom Lodge was a genuine hit with our parents. The animals created conversation and wonder regardless of age. My father-in-law spent two hours one evening just sitting on the balcony watching the savanna.
The distance from Magic Kingdom (no Monorail, requires bus) is the main grandparent concern. Bus rides are comfortable but add time to every park outing.
The One Drawback
Location. AKL is on the far western side of property, meaning it's bus-only to every park except Animal Kingdom. Buses are reliable but buses are buses. If Monorail access is a priority, this isn't your resort. If experience is the priority, it might be the best resort on property.
